You can barely keep your eyes open, but your body does not wish to sleep. You look around at all of the things you can do, but none of them seem appealing. Instead, you’ve found yourself thinking, “What is there to do?” Boredom has struck. You scroll through the list of games you have already, but nothing seems appealing. How do you sate this craving for something new without breaking your bank? Why, free games, of course! This may be slightly more difficult with the loss of Adobe Flash Player in 2021, but many Flash emulators have saved the day. In no particular order, here are some of the best websites to download (or just load in-browser) and play some games for free!

#1. Game Jolt

Game Jolt is a classic platform for creators to upload their games! It’s also the home of Scott Cawthon’s FNAF World and Ultimate Custom Night, for completely free! It’s also been the launchpad for some popular games like “Spooky’s Jumpscare Mansion” and “Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning”.

Another classic platform for creators, itch.io holds many popular games today, like “That’s Not My Neighbor” and “Buckshot Roulette”, but it also features some popular free games, like “Friday Night Funkin’” and the parallel-world sequel to “Undertale”: “Deltarune”. It also gave many small creators a place to put games out into the world, like “Eternally Us” and “Pom Gets Wi-Fi”

#3. Kongregate

Kongregate is one of the places to go for in-browser games. It has a vast library that holds a springboard for tons of large creators to find small games. It holds collections of classic browser games, like “Sort the Court”, “Very Organized Thief”, the “Infectonator” series, and the horror narrative games created by “scriptwelder”.

#4. Newgrounds

Newgrounds is the poster child for free game posting and exploration! Not only was it the textbook nerd’s social media of its time (featuring videos like “The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny”), it was the home of the Henry Stickmin series of games, like “Escaping the Prison” and “Stealing the Diamond” which, fun fact, were made by the same creators as the popular social deduction game that just about everybody and their mother knows, “Among Us”. It also featured games like “Happy Wheels” and “The Impossible Quiz.” It was also the roaming place for famed Youtuber Markiplier in his beginning years on youtube!

#5. Vgperson

Vgperson is a much smaller platform run by a single person, but her work in translating several games has been showcased in paid releases and remasters on Steam! On her website, vgperson.com, you can find the original versions of those games for completely free. Most of the games are from RPGMaker, which is a game-designing software mainly used in Japan. Some of these games, like Ib, Your Turn to Die, and Mad Father, have exploded in popularity and have grown a small cult following for their powerful stories condensed into relatively short games.

#6. Steam

Of course, Steam is the main engine on computers for games in general, but it features tons of free games that are also incredibly good. Some of the more popular titles are “Doki Doki Literature Club”, “Counterstrike”, and “Destiny 2”. Being the largest online game site, there is an endless variety of games to find, from visual novels and narratives to endless combat and action.

#7. Cool Math Games

Cool Math was the place for all kids and teens to access and play when they were bored in school in the 2010’s. Featuring the “Papa Louie’s” franchise, the “Run” series, and the “Fireboy & Watergirl” series prominently, Cool Math Games showcased several popular small games that provide entertainment for all ages and nostalgia for a generation of people.
